In July 1906 National Geographic published their first wildlife photographs – the ones you see here. I have, in the past, stumbled across a number of them on Tumblr, Pinterest and the like. The spookiness always intrigued me, but I never knew about their origins, until yesterday, when I discovered that they were shot by pioneering photographer George Shiras III. One of his techniques was to travel silently across water, then, whenever he heard a rustling in the bushes or trees, he would point his camera and shoot.
