In July 1906 National Geographic published their first wildlife photographs – the ones you see here. I have, in the past, stumbled across a number of them on Tumblr, Pinterest and the like. The spookiness always intrigued me, but I never knew about their origins, until yesterday, when I discovered that they were shot by pioneering photographer George Shiras III. One of his techniques was to travel silently across water, then, whenever he heard a rustling in the bushes or trees, he would point his camera and shoot. What you see are the first photographs taken using flash photography. You can find out much more about this story here.
